Water bill jump from topping off finally hit me this week

Been doing this 20 years and still wasn't ready for the meter reading. Desert air's pulling close to an inch every couple days off a 15k gallon pool this time of year, so I'm hauling the hose out constantly. Finally sat down and did the math on gallons versus what the utility charges per unit and it's not small change, more than I figured for just keeping the level up. Makes the autofill valve threads on here look a lot more appealing than they did last month. Anybody actually tracked their summer bill increase before and after switching to one, curious if it pays for itself in a season or if I'm overthinking it at 2am after a shift.

haven't done the autofill math myself but the evap number rings true, my 13k swamp loses way more in july than i expect too. one thing that gets left out of these threads though is the water bill isnt just gallons, my city bills sewer based on water usage too so topping off was quietly hitting me twice.

Sewer double-dip is real, Vegas water district doesn't do that for me but city to city it varies a lot. Before I'd guess at payoff time, what's your actual per-gallon rate including whatever fees stack on top, mine's got like four line items on the bill and only two matter for this math. Autofill just refills what evaporates so it won't shrink usage, it just makes it automatic and you stop noticing the hose running, could argue that costs more not less if you're bad about checking levels.
