A mid-size vinyl liner pool (about 16×32) installed in Allentown typically runs $49,500–$77,000 with standard equipment and a basic deck. The liner itself is replaced every eight to twelve years at $4,400–$7,700:
| Job | Typical Allentown price |
|---|---|
| Small vinyl liner pool (about 12×24), installed | $38,500–$55,000 |
| Mid-size pool (about 16×32), installed | $49,500–$77,000 |
| Large pool (about 20×40), installed | $71,500–$104,500+ |
| Polymer wall upgrade over steel | $2,200–$5,500 |
| Vinyl-covered steps, benches or sun ledge | $2,200–$6,600 |
| Decking and coping | $5,500–$16,500 |
| Equipment upgrades (heater, salt, automation) | $3,500–$10,000 |
| Safety cover | $2,200–$4,400 |
| Permits and inspections | $400–$2,800 |
| Liner replacement, later (every 8–12 years) | $4,400–$7,700 |
Pennsylvania pricing is above the national baseline used for these estimates, mainly on labor and permitting. Rectangles cost less than freeforms, steel walls less than polymer, and a thicker liner (27 or 28 mil) adds a little up front and years to the first replacement.
The second liner is part of the real cost of a vinyl pool — ask every bidder what a replacement will run and how long the first one should last.

Southeast PA digs workable soils with the occasional rock surprise; the west adds slope — Pittsburgh-area lots often need retaining walls and creative decking. Frost-depth plumbing and freeze-thaw-tolerant concrete are standard, and older-suburb access (narrow side yards, mature trees) shapes more bids than people expect. Vinyl liner pools dominate freezing climates because the wall system tolerates frost heave better than a rigid finish and the liner is forgiving of winterization.

Ask about the wall system, floor material and liner gauge, confirm the liner warranty in writing, and get a price for the first liner replacement now so you know the long-term cost. Compare at least three itemized bids for the same size and shape. Pennsylvania home improvement contractors register with the Attorney General's office (HICPA) — verify the registration and insurance. Pool permits run through your municipality under the Uniform Construction Code, with barrier requirements (fences, self-latching gates) enforced at inspection. Philly-metro townships vary widely in timeline; ask your builder for recent local examples.

Eight to twelve years is typical, longer with a thicker liner, balanced water and a cover. Fading, brittleness, wrinkles and leaks at seams or fittings are the signs it is time. Replacement is a one-to-three-day job once the new liner arrives, and the pool is otherwise unchanged.
Usually four to eight weeks after permits: a few days to dig and set the walls, a week or two for plumbing, the floor and the deck, then the liner is installed and the pool filled in a day. Custom liners are made to measure and can take two to four weeks to arrive. Liners install best in warm weather, so spring and summer book first.
The smooth surface uses fewer chemicals than plaster and never needs resurfacing, but the liner itself is the recurring cost — roughly the price of a resurfacing spread over a similar interval. Keep the water balanced, avoid letting the level drop, and use a cover to extend liner life.
The outdoor season in Allentown runs late May through mid-September — about 4 months unheated. A full professional winterization each fall protects plumbing and equipment through the freeze, and spring openings cluster into the same few weeks. Expect a late-May-to-mid-September unheated season with humid summers and genuinely cold winters. Heaters stretch the shoulders; a full professional winterization protects the investment from November through March.

Both perform well. Galvanized steel panels are the lower-cost standard and very strong; polymer (plastic) panels cost more but cannot rust and suit salt systems, coastal air and wet soils. Either way, ask how the panels are braced and how the deck is tied to the walls so the coping does not shift.
Yes — walls are built on site, so the depth profile is yours to choose, including diving depths. Spas are usually added as a separate fiberglass or gunite unit beside the pool rather than inside the liner structure. Tanning ledges and benches are formed and then covered with the liner.
